AIA'S MEADOW

SBLA Landscape Design + Rachel Derum were engaged in 2020 by Darebin City Council to design and procure a memorial for Aiia Massarwe, situated within Bundoora Park.

Upon being engaged to deliver this incredibly special project for Aiia, Rachel and Simone sat at the base of a large river red gum in the middle of Bundoora Park. We grieved Aiia, we didn’t know her but we felt her. We sat and talked about what it is to be a woman and how we can create a place for people to sit, seek solace and community. We spoke with Aiia’s friends and past teachers and most importantly met with her family on the site. For us, this place needed to connect Aiia to her sisters – to show her bright, happy, funny and positive spirit rather than act as a memorial that was tied to a horrendous event – for this does not define Aiia.

We asked ourselves, how it can be a place that represents to all that didn’t know Aiia the true beauty and brightness that was her. How this place can connect women to women, a sisterhood that extends far beyond the site itself.

We learnt that Aiia loved nature, shells, flowers and rainbows – so this led us to the concept of Aia’s meadow – a native meadow with an elevated daisy chain at it’s centre. We saw a way to connect the daisy chain to women - a universal language that most females make at some stage of their lives. The daisy chain is often created in solitude or in a group. We also believed that this concept connected the site to the Community’s beautiful tribute “A flower only” the flower tram that was filled with flowers for Aiia.

ENTRANCING OTHERS - GIPPSLAND ART GALLERY

ENTRANCING OTHERS

The artists in the exhibition represent a cross section of established and emerging practitioners from around Australia, and everyone has manifested a uniquely intriguing representation of what it is about the animal that entrances.

This exhibition was organised by Rona Green. Of the process she said “It was left up to the artist to decide whether for them this was best done literally, metaphorically, conceptually, symbolically, poetically, or any other-ally.” By investigating the theme via linocut and woodcut, to etching, aquatint and mezzotint, to lithography, screenprint and digital imagery, this selection of works beautifully illustrates the distinct qualities of a range of printmaking techniques.

It is befitting to note that each of the artists has generously donated print number 44/44 from their edition to the Gippsland Art Gallery collection.

The participating artists are Sue Anderson, Andrew Antoniou, GW Bot, Hannah Caprice, Jazmina Cininas, Paul Compton, Rachel Derum, Philip Faulks, Angus Fisher, Rona Green, Rew Hanks, Greg Harrison, John Hart, Bill Hay, Deanna Hitti, Nicola Hooper, Kyoko Imazu, Clare Jackson, Freya Jobbins, Rhi Johnson, Michael Kempson, Julian Laffan, Otto MacPherson, Cassie May, Aaron McLoughlin, Katy Mutton, Angela Nagel, Tim Pauszek, Rujunko Pugh, Michael Reynolds, John Robinson, David Rosengrave, Heather Shimmen, Anne Starling, Georgia Steele, Neale Stratford, Sophia Szilagyi, Julian Twigg, Peter Ward, Allie Webb, and Deborah Williams.

'SLEEPING IN THE FOREST', OFF THE KERB GALLERY, MELBOURNE

‘These collages honour the connection between all things. The vital force that animates the raven is the same that heats the rock. It rushes through the treetops and it swells inside our chests.

Like the mysterious and creative cycles of nature, collage explores the possibility of an endless reimagining of forms.

Adorned with spears or guided by birds, pulled to the tides or into moonlit woods, I wish to reconnect these figures with the wilderness that surrounds them and to the wild self within. Sitting in silent conversation with the self and the world they know the boundlessness of both.’ Rachel Derum

'FEMINISMS 1975 - 2022' GEORGE PATON GALLERY

‘When you think about Feminism, what do you think? - Feminisms 1975-2022’
Group Exhibition
George Paton Gallery
University of Melbourne

‘Feminisms 1975-2022’ looks at the history of feminist engagement in the George Paton Gallery from the 1970s to today, and reviews the nature of the various feminisms that have emerged over the past 50 years and where they sit in today’s climate. This exhibition seeks to engage conversations in a democratic, inclusive way and to encourage a diverse array of voices and responses, demonstrating the plurality of contemporary feminisms rather than imposing a singular narrative.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY EXHIBITION - OFF THE KERB GALLERY

‘Choose to Challenge’
International Women's Day Group Show

In 2021 International Women’s Day is themed around the slogan #ChooseToChallenge

We can actively challenge gender bias and inequality. We can celebrate women’s achievements and spotlight their callenges particulalrly in recent times of Covid-19 where more women than men suffered job losses yet their management of life and family in ISO at home was remarkable. The Black Lives Matter movement highlighted the challenges women, women of colour and trans women face every day.

Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.

‘The Journey of Violets’

In winter’s last days, the migration of violets are beautiful.
On grey midday’s of Winter,
When violets are moved in small wooden boxes
– their mobile homes –
With their roots, leaves, grafts and soil,
Saved from cold shadows and wrapped in Spring’s satin scent;
A thousand laments spring from my chest and flow down my cheeks:
I wish humans could take their home too
– roots, leaves, grafts and soil –
Where ever they move,
Away from cold winds,
And into bright sunlight.

Mohammad Reza Shafiei Kadkani.

’Animalia’ is a group exhibition celebrating life on our planet. It is an exploration of the importance of each organism on the planet and the innate connectedness or disconnectedness of the world we live in. It explores our responsibility to the environment - a collective consciousness as “caretakers” of the world around us.

Throughout history, science and arts have revealed and reveled in the complexity of animals. Scientists, philosophers and creatives alike have each embraced the multifaceted nature of animals to cross, blur, and re-imagine the boundaries between human and animal. Clinical findings show a beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals on emotional, psychological, and physical facets.

How has the natural world affected your life? Are there particular creatures or natural environments that inspire you or capture your imagination? How do you imagine your relationship with animals? Do you believe animals and humans can coexist in harmony with one another? In this show, artists express their symbolic, metaphorical or literal version of Animalia.

Off the Kerb celebrates its 12th birthday with this large scale group exhibition by donating proceeds from sale of art to Signal Hill Sanctuary, a safe and caring home for abused, neglected or unwanted farm animals.
